Roundhouse Kick Defense Drills: A Reaction Drill for Catching Roundhouse Kicks
Whether you’re in the ring or on the mats, the hardest strike to defend against isn’t necessarily the fastest—it’s the one you didn't see coming.
When an opponent throws a roundhouse kick, split-second recognition is the difference between a successful counter and taking a heavy hit to the ribs. In our latest training video, we break down a Roundhouse Kick Defense Drill designed to help you track, catch, and control kicks from either side.
The Challenge: Dealing with Ambiguity
In the heat of a spar, your opponent won't tell you which leg is coming. This drill focuses on visual tracking. By having a partner alternate kicks without warning, you force your brain to stop "guessing" and start "reacting."
How the Drill Works
The goal is simple but the execution requires focus. Your partner can throw a roundhouse kick to either side of your body. Your job is to stay light on your feet get out of the way, but if you can't use the appropriate "catch" technique based on the side of the attack.
