Mae Geri: A Precision Front Kick Drill for Christiansburg Shotokan Students

The Secret to a Powerful Mae Geri: Squeeze and Re-chamber

In traditional Shotokan Karate, the Mae Geri (front kick) is far more than just a forward strike. It is a masterpiece of compression and expansion. In our latest training video, we break down the mechanics that separate a basic kick from a high-level technique.

Whether you are training with us from Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Radford, or online. m=Mastering these three phases of the front kick is essential for both your kata and kumite.

Step-by-Step Drill Breakdown

  • The Squeeze: Rather than just lifting the knee, you must squeeze it upward toward the chest, pulling the heel in as close to the body as possible. This tight "chamber" stores the energy needed for an explosive snap.

  • Maintain Your Guard: As you lift the leg, ensure your hands remain in a strong defensive position. A common mistake is dropping the hands toward the knee, which leaves your head and torso exposed.

  • The Vital Re-chamber: After the kick is extended, you must snap the leg back solidly to the chambered position. As the drill emphasizes, you want to "snap it all the way back" before setting the foot down under total control.
