Stop Reaching: The "Tight Catch" Drill for a Better Guard

One of the hardest habits to break in combat sports is the urge to reach for incoming strikes. The moment you "chase" a punch, you leave your ribs and chin exposed.

In our latest video, we demonstrate a simple but effective partner catching drill designed to keep your elbows in, your hands up, and your defense impenetrable.

Why Your Guard "Leaks"

The instinct to meet a strike halfway is natural, but dangerous. If your hands move away from your face to catch a hit, a clever opponent will simply change levels or hook around your outstretched arms. As noted in the video, "If I do this [reach], she's going to hit me."

How to Run the Drill

This drill is all about staying "small" and keeping your frame tight.

  1. The Setup: Hands up, elbows tucked in toward the ribs.

  2. The Feed: Your partner throws strikes toward your center or head.

  3. The Catch: Keep your hands close to your face. Let the strike come to you and "catch" it right in front of your features.

  4. Stay Tight: Focus on keeping those elbows pinned. This ensures that even if you miss a catch with your hands, your arms are positioned to shield your body.

Key Takeaway: Keep it nice and tight. The goal is to get used to the impact without breaking your structure.
