Are you looking to add explosive power and speed to your Shotokan practice? In our latest training session at NRV Traditional Karate, we broke down the mechanics of the "Shift"—a fundamental movement that separates a standard punch from a truly devastating strike.
The Breakdown: Focus on the Front Leg
The drill featured in our latest video focuses on a specific type of movement: the front leg bend and shift. As noted in the training session, the emphasis isn't just on raw speed or how hard you can hit—it’s about structural integrity.
Key Technical Points from the Drill:
Maintain Alignment: The most critical part of the shift is keeping your body aligned until the very end of the movement.
The Power of Rotation: If you rotate too early, you lose the driving force behind the punch. Wait until the final moment of the shift to engage the rotation.
Front Foot Dynamics: By playing with the distance and the "short" shift of the front foot, you can effectively bridge the gap between you and your opponent during sparring.
