Explosive Kizami Zuki Drills

Kizami Zuki Drills

Mastering the Shift: Powering Your Kizami Zuki

In our latest training session at the dojo, we’ve been breaking down the mechanics of movement. Specifically, we are focusing on how to close the gap with speed and intent. If you watch our recent video below, you’ll see the team working on a dynamic shifting drill designed to turn a standard jab into a fight-ending strike.

The Drill: Shifting with Purpose

The core of this drill is understanding that power in Shotokan Karate doesn't just come from the arms it comes from the floor.

  1. The Launch: You begin by pushing explosively off the back leg.

  2. The Elevation: As you push, you lift the front leg slightly to allow for a smooth, unimpeded glide.

  3. The Connection: The punch the Kizami Zuki is timed to land exactly as your weight shifts into the target.

By using your entire body mass to "shift" into the strike, you generate significantly more force than you would by standing still.

Relaxation Leads to Speed

As mentioned in the video the key to this movement is staying relaxed. In Kumite (sparring), tension is the enemy of speed. You want to remain fluid and loose so that when you decide to move, you can explode forward without giving your opponent any "telegraph" or warning.

Why We Practice This

We aren't just hitting pads; we are mastering principles of functional movement and efficiency. Whether you are a beginner learning your first Kihon or an advanced student refining your sparring, these Kizami Zuki drills are the bread and butter of effective distance management.
